Spectacular Events for Students in London this Autumn
London is truly one of the best places in the world for international students to come and enjoy learning against the backdrop of a city rich in culture, and history. Are you thinking about studying in London? If you’re an international student considering coming to London you might be wondering what else there is to do in the UK’s capital.
Summer might soon be over but London’s annual agenda of exciting events will continue on into Autumn. So, we wanted to put together a quick list of just some if the many spectacular events the city has to offer in the coming season…
Changing of the guard
Okay, technically this event isn’t exclusive to Autumn but it’s definitely one you shouldn’t pass up on, no matter what time of year you’re in London. You’ll get to take in the striking sight of British pomp and pageantry, as the New Guard takes over duty from the Old Guard in a ceremony outside Buckingham Palace.
The famous ceremony usually lasts around 45 minutes and starts around 10:30 am when the Old Guard forms up in the forecourt of the palace. It’s an entirely free to view spectacle of British tradition, so you can enjoy viewing the guards dressed in their iconic red tunics and bearskin hats without spending a penny. Keep in mind, there is no ceremony whenever large events are being held in the city centre.
Film4 summer screen
The Film4 Summer Screen, held at Somerset House, is on until the 22nd August and gives you the chance to watch a film on London’s largest outdoor screen. Many bring picnics with them as they settle down to view modern and classic films under starry skies, in the stunning fountain courtyard of Somerset House.
From Cannes award-winners to UK premieres, there’s so much to see at the open-air film festival, and it’s all in full surround sound. The festival also includes special screenings, guest introductions, food and drink, and even music sets inspired by the films.
Notting Hill Carnival
From the 25th to the 27th August this year the streets of west London will be flooded with Caribbean colours, music and flavours. Since 1964, the Notting Hill Carnival is now the largest street festival in Europe.
Fantastic floats and creatively costumed performers make their way down the streets of the city as part of a massive parade celebrating traditional Caribbean culture. Steel bands, dancers and innovative performers and calypso music come together as part of the festivities. Plus there’s plenty of delicious Caribbean culinary treats and food stalls littered throughout the parade route.
This annual event takes place from the 1st to the 30th September, and celebrates the River Thames. A month-long season of creative and diverse events come together to bring the river to life. From inspirational art and archaeology to boat races and live performances, the diverse programme stretches along the whole length of London’s famous river.
There’s even an opportunity for visitors to get on the water, with water sports and boat parties. It’s an event that truly takes people on a journey into the rich history and culture of the Thames, and there will be plenty of other free exhibitions over the course of the month.
London Design Festival
Any lovers of art will get to experience dynamic and innovative design projects in venues across London, from the 15th to 23rd September. The annual London Design Festival will see world class creative talent gather together in a range of innovative installations and events, for a celebration of contemporary design.
The festival has been held in the city since 2003, and always showcases the very best work from designers, architects, artists and more. From local studios to grand museums, many unique venues across London will host hundreds of large-scale installations, exhibitions and events.
These are just a handful of the Autumn events the city has to offer, and there’s plenty more where they came from.
