Overview of Aston University

As one the oldest Universities, Aston got its humble beginnings in 1875 as the School of Metallurgy in Birmingham and Midland Institute. With its long-standing dedication to excel in mind, it became the UK’s first College of advanced technology in 1956 and soon after received its University status through a Royal Charter from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II in 1966.

Today Aston is a top public research university located in the second biggest city in the UK, Birmingham. Aston has a beautiful and efficient 60-acre campus at Gosta Green, Birmingham, one of the youngest and biggest cities of Europe. Due to its central location, students are 10 minutes away from the city where there is no scarcity for culture, entertainment and adventure.

Student Life

Aston offers a complete student experience for an international student. It offers a lifestyle full of education, improvement, adventure and fun. Right from the time a student lands in the airport, senior native students called Aston aunties are assigned to receive all the students and show them around. This is followed by the International Orientation Programme, where students are eased into Birmingham’s lifestyle and the workings of the Student Union. Personal student advisors and welfare staff are assigned to all students to take care of their every need from emotional support to visa and immigration paperwork. Free English language support is available, and the dedicated Careers and Placements team can advise students on part-time work opportunities and work placements during the course.


Aston University accommodation is one that is adored and appreciated by all its students. The University gives guaranteed housing for all for the entire period of their studies. These housing flats are self-sufficient with about seven beds per unit. They are explicitly managed to make the students feel comfortable and at home.


Once accustomed to the place, Auston offers various activities through sports centres, dance studios, clubs and societies. Native games like Kabadi and singing groups focusing on Bollywood gives Indians a touch of home away from home.

Recreational activities are also provided for through over 120 station gyms, cafes, restaurants, and many more such amenities. Another attractive feature is the Aston library which stands tall with four floors full of over 250,000 books, 800 periodicals, 700 reading spaces and 3,500 electronic journals. Enough and more to entertain, educate and enrich.

Aston also prepares the student for the professional life that comes after student life. Its students are hired by firms ranging from Hewlett Packard to Warner Bros. The entrepreneurial students start their businesses through BSEEN scheme. Aston Business School also holds the Small Business Charter due to its entrepreneurial activity and business partnerships. Work Placements

Practical experience is a key feature of Aston courses. Aston University is famous for being a pioneer of integrated work placements during university degrees. Fun Facts
  • The main building in which all teaching takes place is the largest functional brick building in Europe. We also have campus resident geese that can be loud in the morning.
  • Birmingham was an inspiration for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit as the Author, J. R. Tolkien grew up in and around the place.
  • There are fruit trees (apple, pear and plum) all over the campus, and the fruit is collected from them and put in baskets for free in the students ' union.
