Located in the city of Derby, the University of Derby is a public institution, with its history traced back to the founding of the Derby Diocesan Institution for the Training of Schoolmistresses sometime in 1851. In 1992, the establishment finally got its university status and currently provides more than 300 undergraduate programmes for international students. The university is committed to providing expert and industry-relevant teaching across its undergraduate, postgraduate and foundation degree. At any point, there are more than 1,700 international students enrolled at the university from across 100 countries.
Considered as the least selective institution, the University of Derby acceptance rate is estimated to be between 80 and 90%.

- Derby's Silk Mill is believed to have been the first factory in the world, and it was the first silk mill in England. The Lombe Mill, as it was called, was built next to the River Derwent after John Lombe visited Piedmont in 1717 and returned to England with knowledge of Italian silk-throwing machines and Italian craftsmen.
