“You will Prevail”- Why Sundar Pichai’s Message is Important to All Students
We are living through unusual times. Educational institutions across the globe have moved to online classes. Graduating students from schools and universities are not sure what to do. Many have put their plans on hold. , In this scenario, Sundar Pichai’s Commencement Speech to the Class of 2020 is a message of hope to all students.
Here is what the CEO of Google said
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet struck the right chord when he addressed the graduating class of 2020, his one sentence said it all – “you will prevail”.
Citing examples from the past, Sundar Pichai sought to motivate the graduation class of 2020 with examples of challenges that the student batches of 1920, 1970 and 2001 faced and overcame. The class of 1920 graduated into the end of the deadly pandemic, the class of 1970 graduated amid the Vietnam war, and the class of 2001 graduated just a few months before 9/11 through these historically significant events, he urged students to be resilient and hopeful in the trying times of today’s pandemic.
It is good to know that approximately 91% of Indian students who planned to study abroad want to continue doing so, considering the safety measures being put in place by the universities. However, the hesitation is palpable and many are still in two minds. Not everyone might want to take the overseas education route but whatever your plans may be, it is time to stop sitting on the fence and move your life ahead – whether in India or abroad.
The 3 things Sundar Pichai asks students to do
Be impatient. Be hopeful.
Until now, you have been impatient to reach high goals, to implement new thoughts, even to make new inventions. Don’t lose that impatience. Stoke the fires of your impatience and keep them burning. Embrace technology, the technology you have in hand will help you create the next technology revolution through which you can make your dreams a reality.
He motivated all students to discover the light within themselves – the things that excited them and not what their parents insisted they do.
He talks about staying hopeful in difficult and trying times.
“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness”.
2. Build on your dreams
Build on your dreams. The dreamers of today are the achievers of tomorrow. Dream big, and you will do big things. Be open-minded and discover the potential within you. Whatever you do, do it for yourself. With an open mind and deep passion, you can climb to great heights and achieve the impossible.
Realise that over every mountain, there is a path although it may not be seen from the valley.
3. You will prevail
Pichai said he has faith that students will become instruments of change and create history. The reason he is confident about this is that history has shown that people have done this before.
100 years ago, the class of 1920 graduated towards the end of the Spanish Flu pandemic.
50 years ago, in 1970, students graduated during the Vietnam war
20 years ago, in 2001, graduates had their commencement day just months before 9/11
“They had to overcome new challenges, and in all cases, they prevailed.”
Sundar Pichai is originally from Tamilnadu and received his B.Tech from IIT Kharagpur. He then received his MS from Stanford and an MBA from Wharton School. He joined Google as a management executive in 2004. From this start was a meteoric rise to become first the company’s Product Chief and the CEO in 2015. and then in 2019 he also became the CEO of Google’s parent company Alphabet.
He says, beyond doubt, the pandemic has caused mayhem in your lives, and everyone is going through trying times. This not the end of the road. You have to be prepared to take hold of the advantages and the opportunities that you will get when things return to normalcy. For that, you need to be positive and hopeful.
We say. Universities in the UK, Canada and the US are prepared to start the Fall Term 2020 with blended learning. The UK home office has also announced that graduates will be eligible for Post Study Work Visa if they start with online courses and join the campus before April 2021. It is time to put your study and career plans back on the fast track.
