Abertay University, which has been working for Abertay Dundee University since 2014, is one of Dundee, Scotland’s two public universities. In 1872, Sir David Baxter, Kilmaron’s 1st Baronet, left a legacy for the establishment of a mechanics institute in Dundee and in 1888 was created the Dundee Institute of Technology. It was recognized as an instructional centre by the Scottish Education Department as soon as 1902 and was one of the first to be designated as a central institution, similar to an ‘industrial college’. In 1994, Abertay was awarded university status.
Abertay University may be best known for focusing heavily on computer games and art design. It is the only UK university in both these fields with official accreditation and has a games partnership with Peking University in China. In the fields of IT as well as business, economics and biotechnology, the University is also academically strong.
Dundee is the fourth largest town in Scotland and the UK’s 51st most populous built-up region. Dundee’s distinctive characteristic is its two professional football clubs, Dundee F.C. And Dundee United, all but neighbouring stadiums. For his varied contributions to areas including medical studies, comics and video games, Dundee was recognized by the United Nations as the first UNESCO City of Design in the UK in 2014.
