Overview of York St John University

The university is based on two Anglican teaching colleges which were founded in York in 1841 (for men) and in 1846 (for women). In 1862, the women’s college moved to Ripon. Over the next century, the colleges gradually diversified their programs of education. Colleges, St John’s College and Ripon College, were merged in 1974 to form the “College of Ripon and York St John.” In 1990, the combined institution formally became a college of the University of Leeds ; this arrangement allowed it to award degrees in the name of the latter, while remaining largely autonomous in practice.

Between 1999 and 2001, all activities were transferred to York City and the college was named “York St John College.” In February 2006, the College was granted the right to grant degrees on its own behalf and the right to call itself University College. On 10 July 2006, the Privy Council approved a request from the College to become a full-time university ; on 1 October 2006, the name became “York St John University” after Tony Blair had been granted, and the first Chancellor was the Archbishop of York, John Sentamu.

The University is situated on a large urban campus in the middle of the northern city of York. Founded in 71 AD by the Romans, York remains the spiritual centre of the North of England, the seat of one of Britain’s two archbishops and the impressive York Minster Cathedral. It contains a wide variety of structures, some of which date back to the original Roman city walls. It is a city of culture, with several theaters and concert halls, as well as small independent cinemas and restaurants. Legend has it that there are 365 pubs in town alone, with larger nightclubs to be found in nearby cities such as Newcastle and Birmingham.
