Things To Do In The UK Over Christmas As An International Student

December 6, 2017

If you’re an international student in the UK and you aren’t going home for the Christmas period, you could find yourself with some free time. As many students go home for the Christmas break, campus may feel a little deserted. If you’re not celebrating Christmas and want somethings to do over the festive period to keep yourself occupied, here are a few suggestions:

Visit the Sea Life Centre

Where: Locations across the UK

Lover of all things aquatic? A trip the Sea Life Centre is a brilliant day out. And even better, you can get student discount. There are a range of different centres to visit across the UK so no matter where your university is, you’re sure to find one that is reachable. With a whole host of undersea creatures to find, you can spend a good few hours there.

Chill Factore

Where: Manchester

Fancy a bit of adventure? Why not spend a day on the slopes? Chill Factore is the UK’s longest indoor ski slope where you can snowboard and ski. If you have never done it before lessons are available but if you’re a pro you can just rent your equipment and get to it! There’s also places to eat and drink when you’ve worked up an appetite.

Work

Where: Your local university town/city

If you’re not going home and you find yourself with a lot of free time, why not make the most of it and earn some money with a Christmas job? A lot of companies, especially in retail, look for part-time Christmas staff to cope with the busy festive period. Students are the perfect fit and you may even kept on after Christmas if you’re looking for a more permanent position.

Escape/Breakout Room

Where: Locations across the UK

One of the latest crazes to sweep the UK is escape rooms. Each room is a different game and has its own theme and story. The aim is to find out how to escape the room in an allotted amount of time. The room is filled with puzzles, clues and riddles that you have to solve. Grab a few other students who have stayed at university for Christmas and find your nearest escape room adventure!

The National Football Museum

Where: Manchester

For the football fans, a trip to the National Football Museum is a must. It was founded to preserve, conserve and interpret important collections of football memorabilia and is a great day out. It’s located in Manchester city centre so if you’re at one of the many great universities in the area it’s incredibly close by. However, Manchester is really easy to get to from Liverpool, Sheffield and other surrounding cities.

Go to the Cinema

Where: Locations across the UK

Cinemas all over the UK stay open throughout the Christmas period. What better way to spend a cold afternoon than by keeping warm and entertained in a cosy cinema? And with your student card discount it will be a cheap day!

Find a Christmas social

Where: On campus

Most universities have on campus social events throughout Christmas. For example Christmas day tea with food, board games and party games, and film screenings on Boxing Day. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas there’s no harm joining in with the social activities and it can prevent you feeling lonely and homesick.

If you’re an international student spending Christmas in the UK, there are plenty of things to do to keep yourself busy!
