UK Puts In Best Performance Yet In The 2019 QS World University Rankings

June 21, 2018

Published this month, the 2019 QS World University Rankings saw 41 of the 76 UK universities featured improve on their best ever performance, with the The University of Oxford breaking into the top five.

Success For UK Universities

The prestigious international league table features a total of 1,000 leading universities and one of the biggest performers this year was the the University of Oxford, which managed to secure 5th place in the world, moving ahead of its rival Cambridge for the very first time.

Oxford is now the UK’s highest-rated university, having also achieved the top spot once again in last year’s Times Higher Education World University Rankings. A total of 41 UK institutions have improved their positions from 2017, with 14 remaining in the same positions.

Also managing to maintain their places in the top ten were the University College London and Imperial College London. This year’s results were the best ever in terms of the performance of UK universities.

Ben Sowter, the QS’s research director, praised the UK results. “Keeping pace is one thing but staying ahead of the curve is a testament to the innovation, insight, capacity for collaboration, and thought-leadership present at UK universities…”

Oxford On Top

The success of the University of Oxford has been attributed to a number of factors, including higher rates of publications, along with an improvement in citations of research by academics. The university currently produces more academic papers than rival Cambridge and its research impact is higher when the number of staff members is taken into account.

Oxford currently boasts the smallest class sizes in the whole of the UK and is widely recognised for its tutorial system. Its class sizes give the university a particular advantage given the current increasing teaching pressures within the UK.

Other Results

Remaining on the top spot was the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), beating out Stanford, Harvard and the California Institute of Technology for the 7th year in a row.

The highest ranking university outside of the US and Europe was the National University of Singapore, which secured 11th place in the rankings. China’s Tsinghua University also managed to increase its ranking to 17th overall, surpassing its main competition Peking University, which ended up in 30th.
